Citrus County Florida
Bordering on the Gulf of Mexico, Citrus County Florida is an integral part of Florida’s Nature Coast. The northern and eastern boundaries of the county are defined by the Withlacoochee River. Tourists and residents alike enjoy the warm Gulf waters, the spring-fed rivers and the numerous lakes. That’s not surprising since almost 25% of the county area is water. Named for its one time major crop, the area was a major producer of citrus until the devastating Big Freeze of 1894-1895. The population is relatively small with only 139,000 residents, one-third of which are senior citizens. There are only two cities in the county, Inverness, the county seat, and Crystal River. Homosassa Springs is the county’s largest community. There’s no Disney World here, and the residents and visitors like it that way-the unspoiled natural surroundings, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, great restaurants, aquatic sports, and championship golf. Cycling is also big with the 46 mile Withlacoochee State Trail. In late summer, scalloping season draws visitors for family outings, which are a combination of snorkeling, diving and a saltwater fishing trip. A major tourist attraction is the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.
